In mid-June, Van Anh and her family of four took a summer holiday in Da Nang, famous as the country’s most livable city, but they felt that the trip was made boring because they had nothing to do in the evening. "Besides swimming, eating out and visiting Ba Na Hills, I realized that Da Nang has very few services for tourists, especially in the evening. After eating, we come back to the hotel and there are no more night-time activities," she said. Thu Huong, another tourist from Hanoi, also spent a night in Da Nang last month and watched a fire breathing act on the iconic Dragon Bridge at night. She said she didn’t know what else she could do. "From 9:30 p.m. streets in Da Nang started emptying and looking deserted. There were a few night markets and backpacker streets with poor services," Huong recalled. He was allegedly involved in the Baller Ape Club, a project that purportedly sold NFTs in the form of various cartoon figures, often including the figure of an ape, the Department of Justice said in a recent statement. Shortly after the first day Baller Ape Club NFTs were publicly sold, Tuan and his co-conspirators engaged in what is known as a "rug pull," ending the purported investment project, deleting its website and pocketing the investors’ money. Based on blockchain analytics, shortly afterward they laundered investors’ funds through "chain-hopping," a form of money laundering in which one type of coin is converted into another and funds are moved across multiple cryptocurrency blockchains, and used decentralized cryptocurrency swap services to obscure the trail of Baller Ape investors’ stolen funds. If convicted on all counts, Tuan faces up to 40 years in prison. This and several other similar cases "serve as a crucial reminder that some con artists hide behind trendy … [Read more...] about Vietnamese charged with NFT fraud in US
