Xoan and Bai Choi singing lead the top 10 outstanding events of 2017 announced by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Xoan and Bai Choi singing were recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The decision was made at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Republic of Korea, on December 8, 2017. Xoan singing in Phu Tho Province is also the first intangible cultural heritage that was cleared of the status as an element of heritage in need of urgent safeguarding as it was scarcely practised by the locals. It was considered evidence of Vietnam's multiculturalism. May 1-7: Dinh La Thang dismissed from his Politburo position
Dinh La Thang disciplined for misconduct at PetroVietnam Dinh La Thang, a Politburo member and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, has received an official warning and is no longer a member of the Politburo of the Party Central Committee for his past financial violations as head of the National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam). The disciplinary measures against Thang were announced on May 7 at the third working day of the ongoing 12th Party Central Committee’s fifth session, which convened in Hanoi on May 5. During its fifth session, the central committee will debate improving socialist-oriented market economy institutions and rearranging, reforming and improving State-owned enterprises. The Committee will also review the implementation of the 15-year-old 9th Party Central Committee’s Resolution on the development of the private economic sector and will consider disciplinary measures against Party members. HCMC calls for private investment in boat stops along Saigon River The HCMC government is calling for private waterway transport and tourism services enterprises to invest in stops along the Saigon River to spur waterway tourism in the city. The municipal Departments of Transport and Planning-Architecture, and districts across the city are jointly drawing a plan to develop a waterway system and examine positions for such stops. Bach Dang Wharf on the Saigon River is considered the central station to serve passenger transport activities and waterway tourism. In addition, Nha Rong-Khanh Hoi Port, which is near Bach Dang Wharf, has good facilities and convenient traffic systems for passenger transport and tourism development. Enterprises seek funds to bid for gold The Vietnam Gold Business Association has written to the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), proposing loans for enterprises to buy gold via auctions. SBV has specified the minimum gold volume to bid for is 1,000 taels, requiring bidders to have abundant working capital. However, gold trading businesses are not as financially strong as banks, says a dispatch sent from the association. “The above requirement has created an unfair competition, eliminating many gold trading enterprises, especially the medium-sized ones, from gold auctions, going against the Government’s policy for helping businesses overcome the current tough times, with the most practical solution being preferential credit packages,” says the dispatch.
