Viet kieu lauded for contributions (04-01-2006) HA NOI — The Viet kieu (overseas Vietnamese) community has contributed greatly to national development and construction, and served as a bridge connecting their fatherland with countries of residence, said Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Phu Binh in a year-end interview with Viet Nam News Agency (VNA). An estimated 2.7 million Vietnamese live in almost 90 countries and territories worldwide, with almost half of them (1.3 million) residing in the US. "Over the past 12 years, the number of overseas Vietnamese returning home either to visit or do business has tripled, from 160,000 to 430,000 annually. So far, expatriates have invested VND3.5 trillion in 1,520 projects as per the domestic investment law and VND630 million in 110 projects as per the foreign investment law," Binh said. Lantern Festival in District 5 As a long-established tradition, the Chinese Vietnamese community in HCMC’s District 5 has begun preparing the Lantern Festival slated for the 15th night of the first lunar month. The annual event is intended for Vietnamese of Chinese descent but local people also come to visit it thanks to its special art performances and other festive activities. People usually hang flower garlands and lanterns to pray for good weather, bumper crops and thriving business. On this occasion, red lanterns are seen on the facades of club-houses, shopping centers, restaurants, hotels and private homes along Nguyen Trai, Luong Nhu Hoc and Tran Hung Dao streets in District 5. PANO - Recently, some China’s orthodox mass media, including the Global Times, the International Herald Leader published articles on China’s illegal placement of the drilling rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 deep in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. These articles are written by Ke Xiaozhai, Zun Xiaoying, Lu Jianren of the Southeast Asia Research Institute under the Guangxi University. A Vietnamese researcher Hoang Truong, out of his curiosity had thoroughly read these articles and arrived at a conclusion that these articles are nothing but the chaotic and unscientific arguments on the phenomenon and nature of the incident. The researcher, in his writing to the People’s Army Newspaper on June 7th, cited the article of Ke Xiaozhai with the so called scientific analysis of the four labyrinths that drive Vietnam to take adventurous acts.
