Photo by VnExpress/Duc Dong Vietnam have been moved up one pot in the SEA Games draw three days after the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) lodged a complaint. They will now be placed in the third pot along with Myanmar, with Singapore moving down one pot to the fourth. The VFF’s complaint about Vietnam’s lowly seeding was to have been discussed on April 22 at an ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) meeting, but it has been resolved slightly earlier after the AFF and SEA Games 30 host Philippines reached an agreement. Vietnam among lowest ranked teams in SEA Games football
Host Philippines announced the seedings with Vietnam placed along with Laos, Brunei, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste. The seedings are based on the performances in the previous SEA Games. In Malaysia in 2017 Vietnam crashed out in the group stage despite winning against the Philippines, Cambodia and Timor-Leste after drawing with Indonesia and losing badly to Thailand. In the first pot are defending champions Thailand and the Philippines, in the second are Malaysia and Indonesia and in the third are Myanmar and Singapore. As a result, Vietnam could be drawn in a tough group with teams like Thailand and Indonesia. Vietnamese football has been on a wonderful run in the last year or so, making the last four of the Asian Games, winning the AFF Cup and entering the quarterfinals of the Asian Cup. Vietnam plans 40 sports and games for SEA Games 2021

The Vietnam Sports Administration has named 36 sports and games that will be featured in the SEA Games 31. Four more will be added later. The events will be divided into three groups: one for athletics and aquatics; another for gymnastics, rowing, football, shooting, weightlifting, and martial arts; and the third for dancing, chess, Vovinam and e-sports. SEA Games 31 will be held in Hanoi and the surrounding Hai Phong City, and Bac Ninh, Quang Ninh, Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh Provinces. The 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games will have more sports than in the past, according to the Việt Nam Sports Administration.
