Danang agrees to study disposal of dredged material into sea

HCMC – The Danang government has given its in-principle approval for a study on the dumping of some 200,000 cubic meters of dredged material from the Tien Sa Port into the sea.

Following the approval, the Vietnam Maritime Administration will study, supervise and deploy procedures to dip the dredged material after dredging navigation passages at the Tien Sa Port in the city, Phap Luat Online reported.

Pham Thi Chin, head of the Danang Agency of Sea and Islands, said that in line with the prevailing regulations, an environment impact assessment should be done before selecting ocean disposal sites.

If the environment impact assessment result shows no danger to the environment, the site selection will be approved.

The next step is that the investor makes a report on ocean disposal and submits it to the municipal government for consideration and approval, she said.

The ocean disposal is set to be conducted four nautical miles away from the Tien Sa Port on a water surface area of 100 hectares.

Duong Duc Xuan, deputy general director of Danang Port JSC, said that the water passage into Tien Sa Port was 11 meters deep, but due to sedimentation, its depth was reduced to 10.5 meters. Due to the shallow water passage, the port has failed to receive large vessels.

As such, the Ministry of Transport proposed dredging water passage into the port.

However, no place is suitable for dumping dredged material except for the ocean, said Le Quang Nam, vice chairman of the Danang government.

Assessing environment impact for the disposal is necessary, but the work is not simple due to multiple aspects such as sites, pollution and the marine ecosystem, Nam said.
