Type 2 diabetes is prevalent in the UK and is caused by the body’s inability to produce enough insulin to control blood sugar levels. This is the key finding in a study published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, which found that taking 500 mg of vitamin C twice daily reduces blood sugar levels throughout the day and minimises spikes in blood sugar after meals. The study said that the antioxidant properties of vitamin C also reduce blood pressure by counteracting the high levels of free radicals found in diabetics.
