On November 30, 2018, a court in the northern province of Phu Tho sentenced Vinh to nine years in prison and Hoa to ten years behind bars for abusing their powers in office. Each of them was required to pay a VND100 million (US$4,300) fine as a side punishment. The two had been found backing an online gambling ring from behind the scenes. A total of 92 defendants had to stood trial in this scandal that rocked the country with over VND9 trillion ($388.6 million) in illegal gambling revenue recorded by authorities.
Lu Phu Loc, 11, has fought bone cancer for two years. Loc, being treated at the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, lives his life normally with the other leg after having one amputated.
