Wear intricately designed Mardi Gras masks fit for a king and queen. Dennis Beckman — this season’s King of the Krewe of Highland — opens the Mardi Gras season with an exhibit featuring his handcrafted, original masks. “The Enchanting World of Fantasy Masks” will run the entirety of the carnival season Jan. 6 through March 4 at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, located at 3015 Greenwood Road in Shreveport. The opening reception will be 2-4 p.m. Jan. 6 at the museum. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. In the spirit of the season, a variety of King Cake samples prepared by local bakeries will be available for tasting. Beckman — dubbed a Fantasy Mask Designer — will feature more than 70 of his high-fashion masks. Guests will be invited to try on select masks and take selfie photos. “I love when people wear masks,” Beckman said. “Masks have always been a part of the Louisiana Mardi Gras tradition and it creates a whole fantasy. When somebody puts on a mask, it changes their whole persona. They become someone else.
