City says 18 socioeconomic targets for 2009 achieved HCMC – HCMC has completed 18 of 20 socioeconomic targets for 2009 after the first nine months, said Thai Van Re, director of the city’s Department of Planning and Investment. The Government and some provinces this year targeted lower GDP growth rates given the economic recession while the city decided to maintain the scheduled targets. The city expects to reach GDP growth of 10.3% in the last three months of 2009 and around 7.5% for the year thanks to the efforts and flexible measures of local authorities, said Tran Hoang Tham, head of the city’s National Assembly deputy delegation. The city government suggested the delegation keep the excess budget to invest in urban infrastructure projects and implement social security policies. The city also sought approval for some private rules to manage a large city with nearly 10 million people.
