If you are in a relationship or ever have been, that you know the feeling of getting home, your wife/girlfriend sitting on the couch in an glass shattering silence. Patiently awaiting the perfect opportunity to confront you, poised with her arms crossed and legs rigidly planted. Your mind races to recover every little detail it can that will aid in the rescue of your recovery assuming things take a turn for the worst. You then start to convince yourself that you are in good shape because you hadn’t been seeing an old high school fling after work or spending more time with friends than her. Regardless, you have done something wrong to upset her and many men forget sometimes how easy it can be to get yourself out of trouble. While others are too proud to buy their way out of a bad situation others have figured out how to redeem themselves with a simple thought that puts the past behind you.
At first thought, you sleeping on the couch sounds bad and after a few restless nights, its really not worth it. Sure you may be able to keep your own covers, fall asleep with cuddling, and you can stay up as late as you want watching your kind of television. But, late at night when the romance of freedom wears off and the need for a different kind of romance comes calling; you are probably wishing you had prepared for the chance that you would find yourself in this situation.
A gift Certificate to a relaxing spa – Some smooth talkers would even recommend hiding on of these in your wallet for safe keeping. So now when your late or you have forgotten an important date, this card can come in handy without hesitation. It should not be used a lie to get yourself out of dodge, but more something to soften the blow and buy you time to get your facts strait and alibi in line. It is not recommended to go to the cheapest place you can find, often they end up costing your more in the end, but get something good…something you would want.
An endearing Hallmark card – Another purchase that should be done well ahead of time, this may make that forgotten anniversary, birthday or special occasion not an issue at all. There are plenty of thoughtful and loving cards with sayings that come directly from the heart and regardless of a missed event for your significant other, anything will do. Putting you back only a few dollars that will certainly keep you out of harms way, buying several for different occasions is a smart thing to do. The best part is that cards don’t expire or get outdated. A tip to keep in mind is that the glove box is not the safest place for these get out of jail free cards. Possibly hiding them in a book, stashing them in the trunk or even under your drivers seat.
Tickets are a great saver, however this takes a little more planning ahead and is riskier if they pass date. But one key feature to remember is that if you are working those long hours to get your next bonus or really just time to yourself, tickets can still work. Take a few moments to think if you have just recently taken her out for a fun evening, the odds of you getting yourself backed a corner are less likely than if you were to let this lost time pass without consideration. These tickets can be to something as simple as a movie. Perhaps it’s the ballet or going to an arts and crafts show. Maybe she has always wanted to see her latest favorite band in concert.
My final gift idea for a man who has found himself in the doghouse and wants to get back in his wife’s or girlfriend’s good graces is something that comes from the heart. We must remember that clichés are clichés for a reason; they mean something. If flowers or a box of chocolates didn’t work most of the time, then they would never have filtered their way into pop culture. You may not think that these simple gift ideas work, but as long as you don’t make it a habit of getting yourself sent to the doghouse, then a box of chocolates or a bouquet of flowers will almost always set things right. Or at least they will soften the blow.
